Abstract

The author of the work under review is a prominent historian of Iranian religions and culture, based at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada. He has published numerous monographs and articles concerning the Iranian world; The Ossetes, originally published in hardcover in 2019 and now available in a paperback edition that includes additional material, is his most recent work.
The Ossetes contain seven chapters plus an Introduction, a very useful historical timeline, two appendixes (including one that did not exist in the 2022 edition) as well as notes, bibliography, and index. There are 20 b/w illustrations and three maps.
The book opens with a preface that describes the author’s bitter experience of Ossetian officialdom, which he hopes doesn't have a negative impact on his research.
The book is a must-read not only for those who are interested in the history and culture of Ossetia; it is also an essential source for Caucasian Studies. Moreover, as an Iranologist, Richard Foltz emphasizes on the importance of a better understanding of Ossetian culture for Iranologists.
